Coway establishes a system for greenhouse gas reduction |
- Coway signed an agreement with Korea Energy Management Corporation (KEMCO).
- Coway makes efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions along with its subcontractors.
In order to effectively respond to the Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Climate Change Bill announced in last August, corporations should first establish a greenhouse gas inventory and have its management system certified by an authorizing agency.
To this end, Coway (CEO, Joon-Kee Hong, www.coway.co.kr) signed an agreement with KEMCO (President, Tae-Yong Lee) on March 30, 2009 at its headquarters to verify the management system for the establishment of a greenhouse gas inventory in view of ensuring statistical management of greenhouse gas emissions.
Coway is the first in the green home appliances industry of Korea that sets up a ¡®greenhouse gas inventory¡¯ management system and this meaningful effort is fully supported by the government since it is in line with the government¡¯s commitment to cutting in greenhouse gases.
The ¡®greenhouse gas inventory¡¯ refers to a statistical system that shows how much a company emits greenhouse gases over a specific period of time.
Coway formed a task force team in the second half of last year to build the ¡®greenhouse gas inventory¡¯ system and KEMCO, the third party authorizing agency, is dedicated to collecting data from 2005 to 2008, analyzing them and verifying the results. The process is expected to take some 3 months.
Coway also plans to expand the establishment of the greenhouse gas inventory throughout its subcontractors, further enforcing the effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Meanwhile, Coway has launched ¡®Coway Eco Way¡¯, the environmental committee at its R&D center located in Seoul National University on March 2, 2009, ensuring to carry out low-carbon green management. In the event, Coway put emphasis on the fact that minimizing environmental degradation and the use of resource was critical for a corporation to secure its competitiveness and thereby to achieve green growth focusing on eco-economic effectiveness. Coway also ensured that eco-friendly management will be applied across the company through the effort of the Environment and Quality Institute.
Joon-Kee Hong, the CEO of Coway said, ¡°low-carbon green growth is an essential element for the sustainable growth of a company, so, we will put our focus on developing green technology as well as low-carbon environmental friendly products.¡± He also added that ¡°I¡¯m sure that this year will the year for us to further improve the corporate image as the eco-friendly Coway.¡±
